Pre-finished insulated cladding panels simplify that process. Their visible face is already the finished surface, so there is no need to paint or apply a final coating after installation. If the wall is masonry, locate and repair the source of any dampness first. If it is a timber or steel frame wall, make sure the framing is sound and that existing plasterboard is firmly fixed. In wet or humid spaces, use a system and detailing method suited to the conditions. A laundry, bathroom or enclosed patio can have different requirements from a bedroom or garage.

You also need to identify services before putting a screw into the wall. Use a stud finder where appropriate and confirm the location of electrical cables, plumbing and gas lines. Measure the wall height and width in more than one place. Older rooms are rarely perfectly square. Measure doorways, windows, switches, outlets and any penetrations, then decide where the first full panel will sit. How to clad interior walls step by step

1. Plan the panel direction and joints

Most wall panels are installed vertically because vertical joints are easy to align and the panels run cleanly from floor to ceiling. Horizontal installation can work well for a feature-wall look or where panel length suits the room better, but it may create more visible joins.

Choose your starting edge carefully. Beginning in the most visible corner can make the final cut panel less noticeable. Allow for expansion gaps where the manufacturer requires them, especially on larger walls or in areas exposed to temperature changes.

Dry-lay the first few panel positions on paper before installing anything. This helps you avoid ending with a narrow, awkward strip beside a door frame or in a prominent corner.

2. Prepare a flat fixing surface

Panels need consistent support. On a reasonably flat framed wall, you may be able to fix through the existing lining and into studs, provided the system allows it and the wall is sound. Mark every stud location clearly before the panels cover them.

For uneven masonry, old brickwork or walls with significant variation, install straight battens first. Pack and level the battens so the finished cladding will sit flat. This extra preparation takes time, but it prevents waves, open joints and a poor result that will be obvious once light hits the finished wall.

Battens can also provide a useful service cavity where cables need to run behind the panels. Keep electrical work compliant and accessible where required. Do not bury unsafe connections behind cladding.

3. Install trims before the main panels

Start and finish trims, internal corners, external corners and edge trims give the job a professional finish. They also protect cut panel edges and help manage movement at corners and openings.

Fit the relevant starting trim plumb and level. A small error here carries through the whole wall, so take the time to check it twice. If your floor is uneven, use the highest point as a reference and plan how the bottom edge will be finished rather than forcing panels out of level.

Around doors and windows, use suitable reveal or edge trims. Seal where required to prevent dust, draughts and moisture from entering the cavity behind the panels.

4. Fit the first panel accurately

Place the first panel into the starting trim or corner detail, then check it with a spirit level before fixing. This is the panel that sets the line for every panel after it. If it is out by a few millimetres, the issue becomes much harder to hide by the far end of the wall.

Fix the panel at the specified points, usually through a concealed fixing flange or designated fixing area. Do not overtighten screws. Overdriving can distort the panel surface, damage the finish or prevent the joint from engaging properly.

If you need to cut a panel, mark the cut line carefully and support the panel while cutting. Use a blade suitable for the facing material and cut slowly enough to avoid tearing or chipping the finished face. Remove swarf and debris straight away, particularly from metal surfaces.

5. Join, check and repeat

Engage the next panel fully with the previous panel before fixing it. Depending on the profile, the joint may be tongue-and-groove, overlapping or concealed behind the next panel. Follow the panel system rather than applying sealant everywhere by default. Too much sealant can make a neat joint difficult and may interfere with the intended fit.

Check every two or three panels for plumb and level. Walls can drift quickly if you rely only on the first panel. Continue across the wall, measuring around openings as you reach them rather than assuming every opening is square.

Where panels meet a ceiling, skirting or another wall finish, use the appropriate trim for a clean transition. A quality trim detail makes the installation look intentional, while an exposed cut edge makes even good panels look unfinished.

6. Finish outlets, corners and final edges

For power points and switches, mark openings from the front carefully and cut only as large as necessary. Electrical accessories should sit neatly over the opening, with safe clearances and compliant installation. If you are unsure about box depth or wiring, stop and get an electrician involved.

Install the final edge trim, corner trims and any skirting detail once all panels are in place. Wipe down the finished surface with a soft cloth and remove protective film if the panels have it. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could mark the pre-finished coating.

Common mistakes that cost time

The most common issue is rushing the first panel. Another is fixing into an unknown wall substrate without locating studs, battens or suitable masonry anchor points. Both can lead to uneven lines, weak fixing or damage to hidden services.

It is also easy to underestimate the value of trims. Panels alone can cover a wall, but trims are what finish corners, openings and edges cleanly. Budget for them at the start instead of trying to improvise at the end.

Finally, do not install over active moisture. Insulated cladding is a fast finishing solution, not a repair for leaks, rising damp or poor waterproofing. Fix the building issue first, then clad with confidence.
